Chasing the Stars by Jax Kim
The house is quiet, but I still listen,
ears perked for a purr that will never come.
Sunlight spills like honey across the floor,
and for a moment, I almost see you there—
a soft shadow curled in the golden warmth,
chasing dreams I can’t follow.
Do you chase the stars now, little one?
Do they shimmer like the red dot you loved?
I hope you’re dancing where the sun is kind,
where your soft paws never tire,
and God hums lullabies into your little ears.
Mommy still whispers your name in the dark,
her voice a fragile thread of memory and hope.
She hides it well, waiting for the night,
when she thinks I’m lost in my dreams.
But I feel the way sadness lingers,
like faint paw-prints in the rain.
I try to mend the quiet with silly messes—
stealing stocks, toppling trinket,
making her laugh just enough
to soften the edges of the ache you left behind.
But some nights, even mischief feels too small.
Will you watch over us, little star?
Send Mommy tiny signs, let her know you’re near.
And if you can, save me a place beside you,
for when we chase the stars together again.
